Richard Woods è nato a Chester (Gran Bretagna) nel 1966; attualmente vive e lavora a Londra. Negli anni Ottanta ha studiato alla Winchester School of Art e alla Slade School of Art e, tra il 1988 e il 1990, alla University College London. Nel 1991 è stato selezionato per la settima edizione del Barclays Young Artist Award show alla Serpentine Gallery di Londra. I suoi lavori sono stati esibiti e commissionati da importanti istituzioni pubbliche e private internazionali: Bloomberg Space di Londra (2012); Art Club 1563 di Seoul (2011); Victoria & Albert Museum di Londra, Lever House di New York e City Hall di New York (2009); Natural History Museum di Londra (2008); P3 di Londra (2007); London Underground’s Platform for Art in Leicester Square station (2006); the New Art Gallery di Walsall e the Wimbledon School of Art dell’Oxford University (2005); Royal Academy of Arts di Londra (2002); Miami Public Library (2003); Fondazione Nicola Trussardi di Milano (2001); Henry Moore Foundation di Leeds (1997). Nel 2003 l’artista ha preso parte alla 50ª Biennale di Arte Contemporanea di Venezia. Benché gli studi di Richard Woods siano stati indirizzati soprattutto verso la scultura, è impossibile definirlo in un’unica categoria: il suo lavoro è, in parte e insieme, pittura, scultura e installazione. La relazione d’interdipendenza che lega l’intera produzione è data dalla forte matrice concettuale e da una continua e costante ricerca di nuovi modi per adornare tutti gli spazi che usiamo quotidianamente. Woods fonde arte, architettura e design, trasformando completamente strutture e spazi. Mattoni, ciottoli, carta da parati e compensato sono modificati tramite disegni grafici che l’artista usa per rivestire le superfici d’interni ed esterni, creando ambienti che combinano fantasia e realtà.

Richard Woods cannot be labelled in a singular and specific category, although his studies are oriented towards sculpture. His work can be read as painting, sculpture and installation. Behind the artists production there is a strong conceptual meaning and a constant research of a new way to decorate spaces of everyday life. Merging art, architecture and design, spaces and structures are completely transformed. Bricks, pebbles, wallpaper and plywood are modified through graphic drawings that are used to cover internal and external surfaces. The result is a setting in which fantasy and reality combine.
