Inoltre le sue opere sono state esposte in numerose collettive: Hayward Gallery, London; Centre for Contemporary Art and Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (2011); MAXXI, Roma (2010); Bonniers Konsthall, Stoccolma; BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts, Gateshead; Tate Britain, Londra; The Drawing Room, Londra (2009); Liverpool Biennial at Tate, Liverpool (2008); MUSEION, Bolzano (2007); Lyon Biennial curata da Thirry Raspail, Stèphanie Moisdon e Hans Ulrich Obrist (2007).
Avery si relaziona all’arte in maniera filosofica e rivelatoria.

Charles Avery was born in Oban, Scotland, in 1973; he currently lives and works in London. In 1993 he moved to London where he trained at Chelsea College of Art. He met Peter Harris there and in 1996 they set up an independently run space called Uncle Grey Presents where they exhibited their first works. He soon gained recognition at international level and his shows have been hosted by leading institutions: GEM, Den Haag (2015); Frac, Paris (2013, 2010); EX3 Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea, Florence (2010); Kunstverein, Nuremberg (2010); Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2009); Parasol Unit, London; Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh (2008). His works have also appeared in numerous collective exhibitions: Lincoln Museum and Usher Gallery, Lincoln (2013); Edinburgh City Art Centre (2012); Hayward Gallery, London; Centre for Contemporary Art and Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (2011); MAXXI, Rome (2010); Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm; BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts, Gateshead; Tate Britain, London; The Drawing Room, London (2009); Liverpool Biennial at Tate Liverpool (2008); MUSEION, Bolzano (2007); Lyon Biennial, curated by Thirry Raspail, Stèphanie Moisdon and Hans Ulrich Obrist (2007). In 2007 the artist represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale.
Avery relates to art in a philosophical and revelatory manner. He creates a metaphysical, parallel universe inhabited by monstrous beings and a tormented humanity, disturbing symbolic figures that come to life through his works. The figurative character is exasperated in his works, with an almost obsessive recourse to drawing, used as a technique in itself or as a basis for sculpture, whereas in his rare works of an abstract nature or in his installations the ambiguity of the subjects is made up for by titles of a powerfully narrative character. With his latest project The Islanders the artist has begun an actual saga set in a seaport of his own invention called Onomatopoeia. His exhibitions report stories of the town inhabitants and visitors, set forth in a rhythm that seems to reprise written rather than visual creation. And it is precisely from the universe of literature and philosophical writings that he draws the motifs of his inquiry, set out in a dialectic between form and substance, essence and apparentness, universality and intimacy in the infinite co-presence of historical time and eternal time. Avery uses art for figurative representation of a third dimension with regard to the purely real or purely ideal ones but, since he inserts himself as a character in his own worlds, his work cannot be seen as an aesthetic flight from an unresolved doubt: rather it is a creative giving which places the artist at the centre of the discussion between reality and its abstraction.
