Donald Urquhart nasce a Dumfries (Scozia), nel 1963; attualmente vive e lavora a Londra. I disegni di Urquhart sono memorie di un intenso passato. Nel 1984 l’artista si trasferisce a Londra, dove stabilisce un rapporto di amicizia e di stretta collaborazione con Leigh Bowery, unendosi presto alla scena drag-performance di cui Bowery e la sua cerchia sono stati i veri pionieri. La maggior parte dei suoi lavori nasce come flyer per il nightclub The Beautiful Bend, un tour-de-force creativo che lartista gestisce negli anni Novanta con Sheila Tequila e Dj Harvey. Lestetica di Urèuhart si ispira a un background culturale ricco e stravagante, motivi storici si fondono con liconografia queer. Bette Davis, Judy Garland e matrone dellepoca edoardiana animano le sue carte in bianco e nero. Un humour linguistico tagliente accompagna tutte le immagini; sarcasmo, ironia e ritmo danno vita ai suoi personaggi e, tramite lesagerazione e lartificio, emozioni intricate e limiti sociali sono svelati.
Donald Urquhart was born in Dumfries, Scotland, 1963. His drawings are souvenirs of an intense past, in 1984 he moved to London, and established a friendship and collaborative role with Leigh Bowery, joining the drag-performance scene of which Bowery and his circle were pioneering innovators. Most of his drawings originate as flyers for the nightclub The Beautiful Bend, the creative tour-de-force that the artist ran through the 1990s with Sheila Tequila and Dj Harvey. Urquharts aesthetic draws inspiration from a rich queer cultural background, historical motifs merge with popular iconography; Bette Davis, Judy Garland and Edwardian matrons animate his black and white drawings. A biting linguistic wit often accompanies his visual; sarcasm, irony and innuendo enliven his characters, where artifice and exaggeration are used to address intricate emotions and social limits.
